What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a cutting-edge anti-aging skin rejuvenating treatment designed to stimulate the production of collagen in the skin, leading to younger,  smoother, brighter and healthier-looking skin with fewer wrinkles.

During the procedure, an electric microneedling machine perforated with ultra-fine microneedles is moved over top of your skin while a topical skin serum is simultaneously being applied.  The microneedles are designed to penetrate through the epidermis to create microscopic punctures on the skin’s surface.  By creating tiny microchannels in the skin, you dramatically increase the penetration of any topical product being applied during the treatment, increasing its efficacy. Additionally, microneedling allows for controlled induction of the skin’s self repair mechanism by creating micro-injuries in the skin which trigger new collagen synthesis, yet does not pose the risk of permanent scarring.

The concept of Microneedling is based on the skin’s natural ability to repair itself whenever it encounters physical damage, such as cuts, burns and other abrasions. Immediately after an injury occurs to the skin, our body reuses the damaged collagen and elastin fibres as well as other damaged skin components to produce new ones.

Microneedling and Collagen Production

It is a skin treatment procedure that involves an electric skin-needling device. The device contains 12 very fine needles. It is used during microneedling procedures to break down old scar tissue and push skin cell generation. Cell production leads to the creation of new layers of elastin and collagen fiber and leads to improved blood flow in the skin.

The device slides along the skin and penetrates upper layers of the skin to create tiny needle wounds. This signals the body to respond by producing collagen and elastin fibers. As a result, the skin becomes fuller, thus reducing the appearance of scars, lines, and wrinkles.

Collagen is an essential protein that helps keep the skin looking youthful, with a firm, smooth, and stretchy texture. Aging causes the decline of collagen in the skin, contributing to wrinkles and other signs of aging. The skin can also lose collagen due to injuries, such as acne scarring, stretch marks, or other scars

What Will I look Like After the Treatment? What is the Down Time?

After the procedure, the skin will be red and flushed on appearance in a similar way as a moderate sunburn.

You may also experience skin tightness and mild sensitivity to touch on the area being treated.

This will greatly diminish after a few hours following treatments and within the next 24 to 48 hours the skin will be completely healed.

After 3 days most visible erythma (skin redness) will be absolved.

You will be provided with a special skin cocktail serum to apply to your skin three times a day for 5 days.

How many treatments do I need and how often the Microneedling procedure can be repeated?

Each patients skin condition determines the number of treatments that are needed.

Microneedling can be safely repeated every 2-3 weeks as needed, from 3 to 6 consecutive treatments.

Collagen induction requires at least 3 treatments, while scar reduction requires between 3 and 6.  Micro-needling can be used on all parts of the body (neck, decollete, arms, legs, etc). Usually results begin to appear after the first treatment. Moderate acne scars may need between three and four treatments, while thermal burns and stretch marks may need five. Conditions such as wrinkles caused by aging, two to three refresher treatments are recommended per year.

Am I a Candidate?

Microneedling is safe on all skin types and colors because the epidermis is not damaged during treatment. The chance of change in pigmentation or post inflammatory hyper-pigmentation is minimal. Skin micro-needling can be used on sensitive and fragile areas (eyes, neck, back of hands) that cannot be treated easily with other procedures.

Micro-needling is not suitable for patients who:

  • have used Accutane (isotretinoin) within the last three months
  • Eczema
  • Seborrheic Dermatitis
  • Chemical Peel (within the last 10 days)
  • Psoriasis & Scleroderma
  • Have open wounds, cuts or abrasions
  • Have had radiation skin treatment within the last year
  • Are suffering from any active skin infections or inflamed acne
  • History of Herpes simplex
  • pregnant or breast feeding
  • have any history of keloid scars or poor wound healing
  • Immune suppression, cold, flu, general feeling of being unwell.

  • AHAs (glycolic Acid), retinol, acidic or active ingredients should not be used for 2-3 days after treatment to allow for maximum healing
  • Exposure of the skin to direct sun for 7 to 10 days
  • Washing face for 12 hours
  • Applying Powder and makeup for 48 Hours
  • Solarium for minimum of 2 weeks
